The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises has reaffirmed its support for the newly-appointed boards of South African Airways (SAA) and South African Express (SAX).
This comes after the Committee’s oversight visit to the state-owned companies. The Committee recognises the challenges that the two new boards have to deal with, following the sudden resignations of previous board members. The entities have been urged to speedily resolve governance issues and execute their mandate accordingly.
The Committee is not entirely satisfied with the presentation made by the SAA board as it was not detailed and appeared to be what the Committee had heard before. Hence, the Committee appealed to SAA to expand on its strategy and give regular progress report on implementation.
In their presentation, the SAX board outlined how they were planning to deal with challenges facing the entity. Both SAA and SAX expressed concerns about the fuel price.
Meanwhile, the Committee also visited Eskom’s Pebble Bed Modular Reactor in Megawatt Park and found that everything had been done to ensure that there was compliance with legislation in terms of the care and the maintenance of the reactor.
