Communal farmers whose livestock has been affected by severe drought which hit the Districts of Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, have started to receive fodder as relief assistance from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The distribution of fodder started on Friday 7th December 2012, at Tontonyane in Mahikeng Local Municipality and Radikhudu in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

The fodder relief assistance will extend into the other severely affected areas in the next two weeks. This vigorous plan by the Department is in response to the worsening effects of the drought throughout the two districts.

The MEC responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development Ms Desbo Mohono says the objective of the fodder relief scheme, is to reach out to the “poorest of the poor” who are likely to lose livestock during this drought period.

The Department’s Animal Health Technicians and Agricultural Extension Advisors will continue to support farmers by monitoring how livestock is being fed, more so rainfall is being forecast in the next few days.

Communal farmers identified as beneficiaries of this relief assistance, are urged to collect fodder at identified locations, and are encouraged to engage their local Agricultural Extension Advisors for more details.
