Mpumalanga Public Transport Inspectorate have in line with the National Rolling Enforcement Plan embarked on an operation to check compliance by public transport operators early this morning along the notorious Moloto Road (K573) and impounded fifty (50) buses belonging to Putco for contravening the National Land Transport Act.
Eighteen (18) buses had no permits and thirty two (32) were found to have been defective. The most common defects were brakes, steering mechanisms and excessive oil leaks. All were impounded and were fined R 2500,00 each.
Meanwhile, the National Traffic Police working with Kwazulu Natal’s Road Traffic Inspectorate removed nineteen luxury coaches near Pinetown for defective brakes. Three of the buses belonged to SA Roadlink, two to Eldo Coaches, three to Intercape, one to Intercity and one to City-to-City. Three buses were private coaches while six were either midi or mini-buses.
“We are beginning to see a trend that many of the big operators are flouting the law by operating defective vehicles or vehicles without a permit. They are playing with the lives of our people and it is unacceptable. We have communicated with all our provincial and metropolitan traffic authorities to ensure that they are detected, prosecuted and exposed,” said Mr. Collins Letsoalo, Acting CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
Commuters are urged to contact 0861 400 800 to report bad driving and/or un-roadworthy buses.
