President Jacob Zuma has sent a message of support, gratitude and congratulations to all South African police men and women on the eve of the celebration of National Police Day, which is marked on the 27th of January each year.

The Police Department will host celebrations in Orlando Stadium, Soweto on 28 January 2011.

National Police Day is an annual event that reflects on the milestones of the previous year and is also an opportunity to explore ways of improving police work.

“On National Police Day we acknowledge the outstanding contribution of members of the SA Police Service in the fight against crime, as evidenced by the marked decline in incidents of violent crime in particular. We thank these patriotic men and women and ask them to work even harder to rid our society of the scourge of crime,” President Zuma said.

Added the President: “While most of us enjoy the relative security of our homes and the comfort of our sleep, these men and women in blue brave all kinds of danger to ensure our safety. We thank them profoundly for this commitment’’.

President Zuma also paid tribute to police officials who have lost their lives on duty. ”They paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of their compatriots and to protect stability in their country,” said the President.

President Zuma further thanked the Police for delivering “one of the safest Soccer World Cup tournaments, and for ensuring, through among others Operation Duty Calls, that South Africans enjoy a very safe and pleasant festive season”.

South Africa stands out among many countries with a dedicated police personnel and operations, which is firmly grounded on utmost regard for the Constitution and laws of the Republic of South Africa.

“On behalf of all the people of South Africa, we wish our police officials all the best on National Police Day on the 27th of January and successful celebrations in Soweto on the 28th”, said President Zuma.
