SA: Statement by Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa, appointing judges to various courts (25/11/2009)

President Jacob has appointed several Judges to serve in different courts in the country.
Under section 174(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and on advice of the Judicial Service Commission and on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, President Jacob Zuma has appointed the following Judges:
* Honourable Mr Justice Lorrimer Eric Leach is appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal with effect from 1 December 2009 in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Mr Justice Jeremiah Buti Zwelibanzi Shongwe is appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal with the effect from 1 December 2009 in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Madam Justice Zukisa Laura Lumka Tshiqi is appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal with effect from 1 December 2009 in an existing vacancy
* Advocate Phillip Coppin SC is appointed as a Judge of the North and South Gauteng High Courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg, with effect from 1 February 2010 in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Madam Acting Justice Keoagile Elias Matojane is appointed as a Judge of the North and South Gauteng High Courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg with effect from 12 December 2009 in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Madam Acting Justice Nomonde Patience Mngqibisa-Thusi as Judge of the North and South Gauteng High courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Madam Acting Justice Sulet Potterill as Judge of the North and South Gauteng High Courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg in an existing vacancy
* Advocate Johannes Willem Eksteen SC is appointed as a Judge of the Eastern Cape High Courts, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth with effect from 1 January 2010 in an existing vacancy
* Ms Judith Margaret Roberson is appointed as Judge of the Eastern Cape High Courts, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth with effect from 1 January 2010 in an existing vacancy
· Honourable Mr Justice Herbert Qedusizi Msimang is appointed as Deputy Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal High Courts, Pietermaritzburg and Durban in an existing vacancy
* Honourable Madam Justice Annah Malefsane Kgoele is appointed as Judge of the North West High Court, Mafikeng in an existing vacancy
* Advocate Ronel Getruida Tolmay SC as a judge of the North and South Gauteng High Courts, Pretoria and Johannesburg with effect from 1 December 2009.
Labour court
Judges to the Labour court are appointed under section 153 (1) (b) read with section 153 (2) of the Labour Relations Act, 1995 on the advice of the National Economic Development Labour Council (NEDLAC) and the Judicial Service Commission, and after consultation with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and the Judge President of the Labour Court.
The President made the following appointments:
Honourable Mr Justice Basheer Wagley of the Western Cape High Court, Cape Town as Deputy Judge President of the Labour Court for a period of ten years with effect from 1 January 2010, in an existing vacancy.
Honourable Madam Acting Justice Urmila Bhoola, as Judge of the Labour Court for a period of ten years with effect from 1 January 2010, in an existing vacancy.
The President wishes the Honourable Judges well in their appointments.
