Government has noted media coverage on the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) report which revealed that three municipalities in Gauteng (Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Midvaal), have been implicated in splurging taxpayers’ money on ghost employees, submitting fraudulent qualifications and employees being guilty of schedule 1 offences, amongst others.
The President issued proclamations which authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to conduct investigations into these municipalities. The SIU was mandated to look into allegations of procurement irregularities and maladministration at these municipalities. The irregularities reported by the media were uncovered during these ongoing investigations and officials found to have committed irregular acts are being dealt with accordingly.
Whilst we recognize that a person is innocent until proven guilty by the courts and other appropriate structures, we commend the work of the law enforcement agencies. The South African Government is determined to root out corruption, and cautions all public servants to avoid being involved in irregular activities.
“Those found guilty of such acts will have to face the full might of the law,” said Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams.
