Now that the first exam paper is out of the way, learners should simply relax and face each paper with confidence. That is the advice from Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, to the province’s 91 512 full-time and 36 837 part-time matric exam candidates.

Mokonyane wished all matriculants everything of the best in their final examinations which began yesterday.

“We wish the Class of 2012 the best of luck as they go through their final examinations. This is an historic milestone for our education system as this class – the Born Frees – is the first group of learners that have received all their education from the democratic government.  We wish them success and a prosperous future,” said Mokonyane.

Mokonyane said Grade 12 learners had already walked a long road to reach this point in their schooling careers.

“It has been many years of hard work and commitment from the Grade R until they reached this milestone. We hope that they utilised all our interventions - including the intensified Secondary Schools Improvement Programme (SSIP),” she said.

The Gauteng Premier further wished the 4 280 invigilators and 8 320 markers in Gauteng well, saying their support for the success of the project was key.

Mokonyane pleaded with parents, educators and society in general not to pressurise the learners but instead offer the right support and encouragement.

She added that the learners were preparing for a tough work and global economic environment.

“Obtaining good matric results will greatly assist them in gaining employment or pursuing tertiary education. They must be encouraged to keep their eyes on the ball for this is but one of many steps towards attaining a portfolio of skills that would help them contribute meaningfully to the country,” she said.

In addition, the Mokonyane urged learners to take advantage of the various post-Grade 12 learning opportunities that the Gauteng Provincial Government has on offer.

Since 2011, Gauteng has awarded 2 351 bursaries to learners in no-fee paying schools (formerly known as Quintile 1, 2 and 3) worth more than R100 million. Hundred and fifty (150) bursaries were awarded to Further Education and Training Colleges while 134 bursaries were awarded for the Tool and Artisan Project.
