The Auditor-General (AG) has found that disgraced former Local Government and Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi used departmental funds to build  a wall and upgrade security systems at his private residence.

The AG’s findings were announced during a presentation by the Head of the Department Mongezi Mnyani to the Local Government and Housing Portfolio Committee of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

The AG also established that the upgrade to Mmemezi’s home did not comply with the supply chain guidelines of Government.

I have submitted questions to the Local Government and Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe to find out what the people of Gauteng forked out for the construction as the expense was not made known.

The MEC must also inform the public whether the costs will be recovered from those responsible for this fruitless and wasteful expense.

Self-enrichment by abusing public money has become a trend among high-ranking government officials who are using state resources to upgrade their private properties. Similar allegations have been levelled against Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

MECs should act as the custodians of public money and should not become the plunderers of the fiscus.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must recommit her government to prudent spending of public money and should cut down drastically on the perks for politicians. The Premier must also fire any member of her executive who engages in the abuse of state funds.

Gauteng should not allow itself become a “Nkandla lite”.
