South Africa is proud to have acquired another medal, the first bronze from Bridgitte Hartley at the Olympic Games, in the women's kayak single K1 500m race at Eton Dorney today.

The medal places South Africa 20th in the medal tally. The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula lauded the female athlete for bagging this special medal for South Africa on National Women’s Day.

“On this special day in South Africa where we highlight the struggle and hardships faced by women and pave a way for them to take their rightful place in society, we are proud to be receiving this gift. A South African woman has created waves and moved mountains in the canoeing sprint race. We honour Bridgitte Hartley for making us proud and wish her a Happy Women’s Day. We urge all the athletes to continue doing their best and we wish them good luck.” Minister Mbalula said.

South Africa today delivered a heroes welcome with the largest crowd at the OR Tambo Airport to welcome the Swimming Team including the gold medallists, Chad Le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh.

“This will remain one of the most memorable National Women’s days with the touch down of our team and a medal celebration. We will continue with the celebrations to welcome other heroes and heroines as they arrive on Tuesday, 14 August from the Olympics. Let us continue to show our support” Mbalula concluded.
