Minister in the Presidency responsible for National Planning, Trevor A Manuel MP, has been appointed as a member of the High-Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing established by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. The group was launched in February this year to mobilise financing for assisting developing countries in combating climate change.

The Group of 19 experts will be co-chaired by the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Mr. Gordon Brown, and Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Mr. Meles Zenawi. Minister Manuel joins other high-level officials from Ministries and Central Banks as well as experts on public finance, development and related issues. Members include Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, President of the Republic of Guyana and Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Norway.

The Group will study potential sources of revenue for financing mitigation and adaptation activities in developing countries. Also, the Group is tasked with creating practical proposals to boost both short and long-term financing for mitigation and adaptation strategies in developing countries.

 

The Group is scheduled to hold its first meeting in London on 29 March. It is expected to issue initial outputs before the UNFCCC in full negotiating session that will be held from 31 May -11 June 2010 in New York.
