MEC Pinky Kekana must step down from her current position as Economic Development MEC following the Public Protector’s Report on the Roads and Transport Department’s corrupt dealings with On-Point Engineering and Julius Malema.
The MEC clearly cannot be trusted with holding public office anymore and must do the honourable thing and resign.
After all, the wrongdoings attributed by the Public Protector to her previous department all happened when she was still at the helm of Roads and Transport.
Consequently her own wrong doing cannot be ignored simply because Ms. Kekana is now MEC in a new department, especially the one responsible for the province’s finances.
The HOD of the Roads and Transport department and the Bid Committees cannot take the brunt by themselves when it is patently clear that they could have been following political instructions when they awarded the tender. Acceptance of a clearly defective Tax Clearance Certificate by the Bid Committee from On-Point lends credence to the suspicion of political interference at play.
This is a crisp example of a closed crony system where state tenders are a conduit to enrich political allies.
We expect MEC Kekana’s immediate resignation in light of the findings of the Public Protector.
