We've come here today to express our heartfelt sympathy to the police woman and civilian who were injured during Tuesday night's cowardly attack on two BRT buses.

The City condemns in the strongest possible terms this kind of criminal behaviour, which is clearly aimed at destabalising Rea Vaya and intimidating innocent commuters. As a result of this deplorable action, two people were injured. I am very thankful to report that both victims are recovering well.

I further want to extend my sympathy to all the commuters who were traveling on the buses at the time of the incident, and family members who heard about the incident and were gravely concerned for the safety of their loved ones.

I also want to commend the driver of the bus for handling the situation in such a professional and brave manner. He didn't stop, but pushed on closer to the safety of the station at Regina Mundi where security and paramedics were on the scene to assist the injured.

The events you witnessed following the incident, including the swift reaction of the police to find the perpetrators, as well as our increased security measures are evidence of our commitment to ensure that commuters can travel on Rea Vaya safely.

Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to commend the JMPD, SAPS and EMS as well as other safety and security agencies for their efforts to provide security for Rea Vaya and thank them for their continuing endeavours to ensure that we bring these criminals to book. I also want to thank all spheres of government and civil society, including the South African Commuter Organisation, the Gauteng Commuter Organisation and other bodies for their support during this time.

Together, we will ensure a safe public transport system for our people.

Thank you.
