South Africa's critical skills shortage was a reflection of a general scarcity of key skills across the globe, the International Investment Council has told President Thabo Mbeki. It was a global problem particularly where technical skills such as engineering were concerned, the Council said during a three-day meeting in George.

The Council advises Mbeki on economic policy. Its members include Independent News chairman Tony O' Reilly, DaimlerChrysler chief executive Jurgen Schrempp and Ashanti Goldfields' chief executive Sam Jonah.

They were impressed with the performance of the country's economy, the presidency said in a statement after the meeting. They also expressed satisfaction at the continuous improvement in the regulatory environment and in infrastructure development.

Noting the impact of international sub-prime financial crisis on the South African financial sector and economy, the Council said it was important to market lead economic sectors to attract investment.
