The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Siphosezwe Masango, says the end of Africa month should mark the shift towards African youth as they are the future.

“This is a generation of young Africans that ought to be empowered, not only by means of education and skills but also the ability to tolerate others. Regional bodies should spare no effort in ensuring that young people are well-learned, and that their potential is adequately utilised,” Mr Masango said.

“Africa’s youthful population should be an advantage because other continents are sitting with aging populations. Investment on this category of the population is sure to bring rewards and the knowledge the continent so desperately requires. In this regard, the committee called for maximum cooperation and collaborate among African states,” he said.

The month of May is Africa Month during which Africans celebrate their cultures and identity. South Africa’s celebration for 2015 had been geared towards educating South Africans about tolerance and living in peace with foreign nationals.

Mr Masango also voiced his appreciation of the government’s month-long programme, which culminated in an address from the President in Mamelodi. Parliament wrapped up the month with a round table discussion and joint sitting yesterday. “Africa should be a model of tolerance and integration. The continent is no longer in chains and that should reflect on how we interact with others,” he said.
