South Africa will join Italy, Mexico, Morocco and the Republic of Korea in commemorating the value and virtue of service to the community.
The country's Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) said the programme will include the presentation of the UN Public Service Awards.
The awards are presented annually for contributions made to the cause of enhancing the role, prestige and visibility of the public service.
The DPSA said the awards were presently given in four categories including the improvement of public service results, the quality of the public service process, innovations in the public service, and the application of Local e-Government.
In South Africa, ML Wahab, a Director in the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, has been selected to receive an award in the category of "Innovations in the Public Service", for the development of the "Mobile Community Service Centre".
This project that led to the development of a police station on wheels was initiated under the sponsorship of the department's "Integrated Provincial Support Programme". "The initiative displayed is being acknowledged by the UN as an international benchmark in improving public service delivery," the department explained.
Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi has called on fellow South Africans to join in and celebrate these achievements at the Old Mutual Offices in Cape Town today. – BuaNews.
