A joint meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) and the Portfolio Committee on Social Development today expressed its pleasure with the Inter Ministerial Committee’s (IMC’s) work towards ensuring that the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) complies with the Constitutional Court’s directives in relation to a valid social grants contract.
The Joint Committee is happy that the impasse has been broken between Sassa and the South African Post Office (Sapo) and that there is now an implementation timeline to meet the Constitutional Court’s deadline.
The Joint Committee is also happy that Parliament has been persistent and exerted sufficient pressure that saw the IMC coming to the fore and finally resolving this impasse, which proves that if Parliament is focused in its work, Members of Parliament produce results.
The Joint Committee is also happy for the people of South Africa because finally the anxiety and concerns that they had about their social grants have now been addressed. The Joint Committee also welcomes the fact that there will be proper communication from government to the public on this matter on a continuous basis to make sure that people are at ease.
Issued by Parliamentary Communication Services on behalf of the Chairperson of Scopa, Themba Godi
