SA: Statement by the Gauteng Legislature, cabinet reshuffling (07/08/2012)

The Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Ms Lindiwe Maseko has today announced the changes in the cabinet which saw a reshuffling taking place in the Political Structures of the Gauteng Legislature. This was done in terms of Rule 172 of the Standing Rules of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, which affords the Speaker of the Legislature to appoint and restructure the Committee Membership.

Furthermore, this restructuring disestablished the Standing Committee on Gender, Youth and People with Disabilities (Geyodi) and the re-established the Portfolio Committee on Social Development.

The first segment in the new Structure was the swearing in of new Gauteng Members of the Executive Council which the Premier of Gauteng, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane restructured as follows:

  1. Mr H Mmemezi who was formerly the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Local Government and Human Settlements tendered his resignation and is no longer a Member of the Executive Council.
  2. LH Mekgwe who was formerly the Member of the Executive Council for Health will now be the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Local Government and Human Settlements.
  3. QD Mahlangu who was formerly the Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development will now be the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Infrastructure Development.
  4. Former Member of the Legislature, Mr H Papo (former Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee in Finance) has been appointed as Member of the Executive Council for Health.
  5. Former Member of the Legislature, Mr N Kolisile (former Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee in Economic Development) has been appointed as Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development.
  6. Mr B Nkosi who was formerly the Member of the Executive Council responsible for Infrastructure Development has been redeployed and is no long a Member of the Executive Council.

The second segment was of the new Office Bearers’ Structure within the Legislature which the Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature, Ms Lindiwe Maseko restructured as following:

  1. Former Chair of Chairs, Mr U Moiloa is now the Deputy Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature
  2. Former Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport Ms N Nkomo Ralehoko is now the Chair of Chairs
  3. Ms T Nkabinde has been sworn in as the new Chairperson for Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport.
  4. Former Chairperson for Portfolio Committee on Education, Ms MP Chueu is now the Chairperson forthe newly established Social Development Committee
  5. Former Chairperson for Standing Committee on Community Safety, Ms E S Nkosi-Malobane will now be the Chairperson for Education Committee.

Former Chaiperson for Standing Committee on Petitions Mr J Khawe is now the Chairperson for Standing Committee on Community Safety

Former Chairperson for Gender Youth and Persons with Disabilities Ms L Lasindwa is now the Chairperson for a Standing Committee on Petitions
