The number of 59 candidates to be considered for short- listing by the Ad hoc Committee established to nominate a person for the appointment of Public Protector is due to the nine declined nominations, four unreachable nominees and the one of Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

The four unreachable nominees are people that were nominated without any contact details. Attempts by the Committee to contact these nominees were unsuccessful as at Monday, 27 June 2016, hence they will not be considered for short-listing. Even the persons who nominated these names could not assist in linking the Committee with these nominees. 

The sum of all the above nominations is 73, which reflects the total number of nominations and applications the Committee received by the closing date of 24 June 2016.
