The delegation is led by the Minister of Health, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, and includes Limpopo Health MEC Sello Moloto, Western Cape Health MEC Piet Meyer, director-general of the Department of Health Ayanda Ntsaluba and other senior managers of the Department.
The delegation participated in the Pre-WHA Commonwealth Health Ministers' meeting yesterday. Tshabalala-Msimang was expected to call for the adoption of a code for ethical recruitment of health workers that should be binding on all Commonwealth Nations.
"Migration of health professionals is one of the major problems affecting many of the health services in developing countries including the SADC region," the ministry said. "The WHA is expected to discuss the strengthening of health systems in developing countries including a specific discussion on nursing and midwifery".
With a leading experience on tobacco control, South Africa was expected to make a contribution to the discussion on the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. – Sapa.
