Professor Ben Turok was earlier today elected co-chairperson of Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests.

The position is one of the posts that became vacant after last year’s Cabinet reshuffle that saw a number of Chairpersons being appointed to the Cabinet.

The Joint Committee’s co-chair Mr Luwellyn Landers was elected Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development.

“I will give a lot of energy to this Committee. The image of Parliament is important especially considering the United Kingdom incident where MPs ended up in prison. We have to uphold the good public image of our Parliament,” said Professor Turok.

Prof Turok will co-chair the Committee with Mr Buoang Mashile from the National Council of Provinces.

He said he was happy to be joining a team of experienced MPs who are leading this Committee referring to Mr Mashile and the Committee whip, Dr Gerhard Koornhof.

Prof Turok’s election completed the process of filling all the vacant Committee Chairpersons’ positions.

Below are all the newly elected Chairpersons:

1. Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture – Mr Thandile Babalwa Sunduza
2. Portfolio Committee on Basic Education – Ms Hope Malgas
