South Africa needs to find a relationship between ideology and policy that will produce significantly improve the lives of the poor, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Thursday.
"We need to ask ourselves what is the relationship between ideology and policy... after that analysis we need to formulate a programme that would have significant impact in changing people's lives for the better," Gordhan told the Development Policy Research Unit's 20 year anniversary celebration in Fourways, Johannesburg.
The finance minister said, however, the idea in itself was meaningless because people on the ground do not care about ideas and policies, they want to see change.
He said in South Africa a balance between growth and development was needed.
"We need to think and ask ourselves how do we link these two and alleviate poverty and unemployment at the same time."
