South Africans have come "very far" with the ANC and they must not lose sight of that, KwaZulu-Natal ANC chairman Dr Zweli Mkhize said on Thursday.

"Our people must remember that the ANC has brought them a long way and even though all the other parties have the freedom to put their policies on the table, it's up to the people to decide who to support," Mkhize told Sapa in an interview, after launching "Media on Wheels" in
Durban's Folweni area.

He said the ANC had the best policies and the best leadership.

"With the ANC, the people of the province and the country would be in safe hands... because our (ANC) president Jacob Zuma is the best candidate to help South Africa move forward."

"Media on Wheels" was the party's campaign platform on a truck.

"This truck will take us to any and every part of the province, and we don't have to move anywhere. We just stand on the back of the truck, switch on our sound system and address the people. We don't need to set up meetings or rallies."

He said it would "bring the ANC closer to the people", who sometimes found it difficult to travel long distances to events and rallies.

In the build-up to the elections, the party planned to use the truck to travel to rural townships, villages, shopping malls, taxi and bus ranks to garner votes.

On education, Mkhize said the ANC was promoting skills development and nurturing relationships between teachers and parents.

"We want to prevent teacher-pupil relationships and we want parents to become more involved in their children's lives. We want them to work together with teachers."

Mkhize urged the elderly not be afraid to vote.

"Both young and old must vote. The ANC has got a lot to offer and will look after different sectors of society -- both young and old, because the ANC is the custodian of our people's aspirations."

The party also urged people to take charge of their communities and become "police officers" in their own right by helping put criminals behind bars.

Mkhize was accompanied by the province's Education MEC Ina Cronje and members of the ANC Youth League.
