APRM is a voluntary self-monitoring tool that was agreed upon by the African Union and Government Implementation Committee of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad).
It is a comprehensive review which focuses on democracy and political governance, economic governance and management, corporate governance and socio-economic development.
Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi announced on Tuesday that South Africa would hold its first consultative conference on 28 and 29 September in Johannesburg.
Minister Fraser-Moleketi said a mechanism had been put in place to involve civil society structures such as amongst others the youth, women's, religious organisations, organised labour and business to participate in the process.
She said the conference would be followed by provincial ones where the premiers' offices were expected to play a crucial role in promoting broad based participation at community levels with the assistance of more than 2 000 community development workers.
The youth, organised labour and organised business have also pledged their support saying the APRM's time frames were achievable.
The Business Unity of South Africa Chief Executive Officer Bheki Sibiya said the APRM process would benefit South Africa through foreign investments as investors would know the country's status.
"APRM is very important without it Nepad will falter, we believe it's time tables are achievable," said Sibiya.
Meanwhile Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOC) representative Eddie Makue said they appreciated government's initiative to involve civil society and they would mobiles organizations to support the process.
All sectors of society are expected to make submissions in line with the APRM guidelines Once the submissions have been received a draft report and programme of action would be presented at the Second Consultative Conference planned for November this year.
After that conference the report would be submitted to Cabinet for approval and the APRM country review team will visit the country to review the self-assessment report and programme of action.
The APRM process also requires the reflection of the opinions and interests of the country as a whole. In that regard, a questionnaire will be developed to collect information.
The questionnaire will be available on the Public Service and Administration's website. - BuaNews
