ident Thabo Mbeki is leading a high powered delegation
to Berlin, ahead of Friday's much awaited unveiling of the 2010
World Cup logo, where South Africa will officially be handed the
reins to start preparing for the world's biggest sporting
event.
President Mbeki, accompanied by First Lady Zanele Mbeki, is
expected in Berlin ahead of the unveiling and his bilateral
political and economic discussions with German President Horst
Koehler and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The South African delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister
Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Sport Minister Makhenkesi
Stofile, Transport Jeff Radebe, Provincial and Local
Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi, Minister in the
Presidency Essop Pahad, Deputy Finance Minister Jabu
Moleketi, Directors General Frank Chikane (Presidency)
and Dr Ayanda Ntsaluba (Foreign Affairs). Members of the
2010 local organising committee led by Danny Jordaan also
form part of the delegation. President Mbeki is also to be joined
by United Nations Secretary General Koffi Annan, Chairperson
of the African Union Commission Prof. Alpha Konare, FIFA
President Sepp Blatter and Issa Hayatou - FIFA Vice
President and CAF President. The ceremony will be taking place at
the Tempodrom arena.
The logo's unveiling will be followed by a question and answer
session moderated by President of the 2006 Organising Committee
Franz Beckenbauer and Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus
Wowereit. The session will also feature President Mbeki, Annan,
Prof Konare, Blatter, Hayatou, chairperson of the 2010 LOC Irvin
Khoza and Jordaan.
The delegates will also be part of the FIFA World Cup Concert
"Football for a better world -from Germany to South Africa" in
which messages of support will be exchanged.
FIFA is billing the concert as the “biggest single football
party ever”. It is taking place at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate,
where fans will have free admission to see live performances of
South African musicians, Vusi Mahlasela and Freshly Ground and
other continental stars including Youssou N'Dour and Ang
