Deputy minister Madlala-Routledge said South Africa was looking forward to forging a partnership with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
“I believe that our two countries can learn many things from each other, the visit gives our countries an opportunity to explore the possibility of trade in military equipments and other assistance,” said Madlala-Routledge.
She said there were many things common between South Africa and Vietnam.
“While Vietnam is separated by thousands of kilometres from South Africa, it can be said that the two countries have much in common in their history. Like South Africa, Vietnam was once a colony of a foreign power and had to fight a struggle to regain its freedom,” noted the minister.
She said despite the absence of a formal military agreement, the two countries have had very good relations and diplomatic ties since 1993.
Lieutenant General Nguyen Huy Hiew echoed similar sentiments and said: “Vietnam is committed to peace and economic development, and it has done a lot in improving people’s living conditions”.
The Vietnam vice minister will also be briefed by senior defence force officials on various aspects around the operations of the South African National Defence Force (Sandf).
