Resignation of Director-General: Trade and Industry
24 February 2005
On Tuesday, I informed the Executive Board and all the employees of the dti of my resignation from the department with effect from 31 March 2005. After spending almost 11 years at the dti, more than five of these as the Director-General, I felt that the time was right for me to consider other opportunities.
During my tenure as Director-General, the dti has undergone a profound transformation. This transformation has included the implementation of efficient business processes and systems, first-class corporate governance, best practice policy-making and strategic planning processes, and the development of a diverse and multi-skilled management team. It is this that gives me confidence that the good work of the dti will continue in the future.
The concerns that were expressed in the media on Wednesday about the implications of my resignation for the ongoing work of the department are unfounded. Minister Mpahlwa and Deputy Minister Hendricks will continue to provide leadership and guidance to the department, supported by an excellent team of Deputy Directors-General.
I have been discussing my exit from the department with the Minister and Deputy Minister for several months and have agreed to continue to work with them in the future on specific investment projects.
