A robust approach would ensure that members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature delivered services to their electorate, African National Congress (ANC) caucus leader Brian Hlongwa said on Monday.

He said quarterly reviews would be conducted on government departments to ensure that "our members account for service delivery or non-delivery thereof".

"All departments will produce their annual performance plans... their budget must reflect what they are going to do to ensure that issues of service delivery are addressed," he said.

Hlongwa said this at a media briefing held at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in central Johannesburg following a two-day lekgotla by the ANC caucus in Kempton Park at the weekend.

All the 47 newly appointed ANC members to the legislature made a commitment at the lekgotla to "be activist caucus members... focused on the renewal of governance and public service in the province in order to increase the confidence of the people of
Gauteng in the ANC," Hlongwa said.

"We don't want to have a legislature that is detached from the people. As long as there are protests, it means there is something we are not doing right - so as public representatives we have a mandate to ensure that aspirations of our people are fulfilled," he said.
