The roads in Emfuleni Local Municipality are in a terrible state, full of potholes, untarred and mostly gravel roads, yet the municipality has wasted R49 522 312.87 on the Nguna and U road projects.

It is deeply concerning that there is nothing to show for the millions spent on these two road projects, as the roads are still untarred. These roads are in a terrible gravel state.

This is a waste of taxpayers’ money meant to improve the living conditions of Emfuleni residents.

The following monies were paid to the service providers:

• Gorogang Plant Hire: R12 046 555.84
• GIBB: R3 025 642.57
• Majantsipe Project Managers: R603 126.50
• Oro Projects: R33 846 987.96

The service providers were all dismissed due to poor workmanship. They have not been blacklisted, and the municipality has not recovered the monies paid to them to render services.

This information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile, in a written reply to the DA’s questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).

The DA demands that Emfuleni must blacklist these service providers for pocketing the money and failing to deliver the work. This will prevent these service providers from doing business with the government and protect the public coffers from being squandered by incompetent service providers.

Furthermore, we also demand that Emfuleni must recover all the monies paid to these service providers, as there is nothing to show for it.

The DA will continue to fight to ensure that all the monies wasted are recovered for the benefit of Emfuleni residents who are in desperate need of adequate service delivery. We will also ensure that all the opportunistic service providers are dealt with accordingly.

Issued by Kingsol Chabalala MPL - DA Constituency Head for Emfuleni North
