Title: Ramatlhodi: Limpopo International Investor Conference
WELCOME ADDRESS BY ADVOCATE NGOAKO RAMATLHODI, PREMIER OF LIMPOPO, DURING THE INTERNATIONAL INVESTOR CONFERENCE, Meropa Casino and Entertainment World, 28 August 2003
Master of ceremonies,
The Minister of Minerals and Energy,
Representatives of business community present here,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen.
It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to Limpopo, in particular those of you coming from far away.
We have invited you here in order to showcase unparalleled opportunities found in our province. We hope to convince some of you to join us in our quest to make Limpopo one of the biggest contributors to the national economy. In this regard we are looking for vibrant and lasting partnerships.
Underpinning this conference is our determination to grow our economy at a faster rate as well as to create jobs for our people. To achieve this we hope that some of you will take advantage of opportunities we shall showcase. I can assure you of my government's full support and absolute cooperation as you set up new ventures and enterprises here.
Master of ceremonies
The recently released outcomes of the second nationwide population census in our country have confirmed - in a more scientific way - the remarkable progress we are making towards our goal of making South Africa a better place to live in.
In Limpopo alone, we have, in the recent past; distinguished ourselves as a preferred investment destination in a variety of sectors, and this international investor conference could therefore not have come at a more opportune time.
In the course of this conference you will be introduced to our treasure chest of minerals, flora, fauna and unspoiled habitat. The fortunate ones might even have an opportunity to shake hands with an elephant.
We encourage you to establish industries for the purpose of processing variety of mineral deposits found in our province. Platinum, gold, chrome, copper, diamonds and many others will be exhibited and exposed to you during the proceedings of this conference. We further urge you to be part of the exciting journey that seeks to make NEPAD a reality in the lives of our people on the continent.
We are amongst the first provinces to have an integrated growth and development plan. This has enabled us to establish a solid relationship between government, the private sector and communities. As we implement this plan government is putting a lot of emphasis on the development of infrastructure.
Limpopo boasts a thriving tourism industry. In this regard our flagship is the great Limpopo Park straddling Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Kruger National Park serves as the anchor of this new park. One other interesting fact is that two of the three South African National Orders are found in Limpopo, namely the Order of the Baobab and the Order of Mapungubwe.
Ladies and gentlemen
By the end of 2002 Limpopo's contribution to the national economic growth output was exceptionally great. At 6.3% per annum, our growth rate has been phenomenal.
However, as confirmed by the recent the May 2003 Growth and Development Summit, enormous challenges still lie ahead of us.
The success of the integrated sustainable development programmes in rural areas in particular, the alleviation of poverty and underdevelopment, and most importantly the creation of jobs for the unemployed, require all of us to act together in a mutually beneficial relationship.
We have come this far working together, and together let's continue to make the difference.
It is now my honour to formally declare this conference open
I thank you
