The Right2Know Campaign is alarmed at reports that another Glebelands peace committee member has been threatened in the lead-up to a court appearance on Tuesday 29 November.  See Glebelands statement attached.

This is the latest warning sign of the continued outrageous and horrifying violence and mafia politics affecting Glebelands residents and other hostel dwellers.

On 7 November, another Glebelands Peace Committee leader, Nkosinathi Shezi, was gunned down after leaving the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court also reportedly after receiving threats.

In May 2015, another Glebelands resident, Sipho Ndovela, was also gunned down at the court entrance.

We join the call for media, civil society, spiritual leaders, concerned citizens, everyone who wants peace and justice for the Glebelands community to join us at court in solidarity with Sthembiso Mkhize who faces threats on his life.

We join the call for the South African Police Service to provide extra protection at the court on Tuesday 29 September.

In July, we called for South Africans to to recognise the crisis of political violence in Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, Durban. Over the past two years, it has been estimated 65 people have been killed, 13 tortured by police and hundreds illegally evicted at Glebelands Hostel. Since 2009, members of the community have used every channel to voice concerns over service delivery and corruption, and persistently called for the removal of Ward 76 Councillor Robert Mzobe and the proper re-election of their Branch Executive Committee.

They were ignored. After protests in 2013, provincial political leaders warned frustrated community members that they would be “dealt with.” These latest threats are a continuation of this cycle of violence. Read more at www.r2k.org.za/glebelands
