The two leaders also agreed to boost cooperation as partners in the US-led war on terror, the Kremlin said in a statement.
The statement came just minutes before a top Russian official said Russia wanted serious changes made to the US-proposed draft UN resolution to lift sanctions on Iraq, threatening to further widen the divide between Washington and Moscow.
Bush initiated the telephone talks to set the agenda for informal bilateral talks the two leaders are due to hold on the sidelines of the Saint Petersburg summit later this month, the Kremlin statement said.
The talks are due to take place on June 1, but that date has not been officially confirmed. – Sapa.
