The Western Cape Traffic Law Enforcement (TLE) services made arrests to the value of R19 498 536.50 on confiscated illicit goods this year alone. This was revealed in the tabling of the Department of Transport and Public Works Annual report for the 2022/23 fiscal year.

During the review period, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) had numerous successes in respect of confiscation and arrests for possession of illegal drugs and illegally caught marine life.

These arrests include:
• R3.7 million worth of abalone
• R9.6 million worth of dagga
• R2.3 million worth of mandrax, cocaine, and other illegal goods
• R750 000 worth of tik
• R6 170 worth of ecstasy, and
• R2.9 million worth of stolen goods such as stolen cables and vehicles.

A total of 93 motorists were arrested for attempting to bride Provincial TLE officers and 72 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested on Provincial and National routes in the Western Cape. A total of 494 arrests have been made for serious criminal offences. 

MPP Derrick America says: “Great work is being done by our Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement officers in tackling crime, and we wish to thank them for risking their lives every day, to safeguard our communities.

Their efforts have led to arrests worth almost R20 million for the possession of illegal goods, such as drugs, abalone, and stolen electricity cables.

The DA-run Western Cape will continue to do more to safeguard our communities while the South African Police Services continue to fail the people of the Western Cape.”
