Well known South African personalities are heading to Soweto on Thursday afternoon, as part of the Proudly South African Ubuntu Schools’ Campaign Against Sexual Violence and Bullying.
The role models – who aim to inspire and motivate learners – include DJ Sbu, Kabelo Mabalane, Baby Jake Matlala, Sonia Sedibe and Miss SA Teen, Celeste Khumalo.

Driven by Proudly South African, the campaign is being rolled out in partnership with the Department of Basic Education; the Department of Women, Children and People With Disabilities; the National Prosecuting Authority; the Film and Publication Board; Orlando Pirates Football Club; Crime Line; POWA; Princess of Africa Foundation; SHOUT; Zinto Activation Group and the International Federation of Christian Churches (IFCC).

“We need to drive home the message to our youth that abuse and violence is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Our learners need to know they can aspire to follow in the footsteps of good role models, as opposed to succumbing to peer pressure,” said Proudly SA CEO, Adv. Leslie Sedibe.

The Campaign was officially launched in Soweto, following the brutal gang rape of a young Soweto girl in April this year. At the time, Proudly SA committed to a school road show against sexual violence and bullying.

While highlighting the issues of sexual violence and bullying, the campaign also aims to educate learners around their rights and responsibilities.
Learners will be given educational materials and will be asked to take the “Ubuntu Pledge” which speaks to moral decency, making the right choices, honourable conduct and living as a proud South African – among others.

Other well-known South Africans – who will serve as role models on the Proudly SA Ubuntu Schools’ Campaign – include Yvonne Chaka Chaka; PJ Powers; Miss South Africa, Melinda Bam; Rosie Motene; Penny Lebyane; John Adams and members of the Orlando Pirates Football Club.

The visits kick off at the Emadwaleni High School in Orlando West, Soweto on Thursday. The campaign will be on-going and will visit all provinces.

DATE: Thursday, 23 August 2012
TIME: 14h00-15h00 (arrival 13h45)

VENUE: Emadwaleni High School, 10898 Armitage Street, Orlando West (Mzimhlophe)
