Mbeki said, however, that he believed certain categories of prisoners should not be allowed to vote.
The court ruled in Braamfontein last Wednesday that prisoners sentenced to jail terms without the option of a fine be allowed to register and vote in the election.
The application was brought by the SA Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) and two prisoners serving sentences without an option of a fine.
Until then only awaiting trial prisoners - who are innocent until proved guilty - and those sentenced with the option of a fine, were enfranchised. – Sapa.
