President Jacob Zuma will today, 02 August 2012, award Military Veterans Medals toformer Umkhonto we Sizwe members for the roles they played in the attainment of democracy in South Africa.
The medals will honour members who served in various capacities, some of whom paid the ultimate supreme sacrifice in the service of creating a free South Africa.
The Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011 was passed by Parliament and assented to in December 2011 by the President of the Republic of South Africa. Section 5(1)(c ) of the Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011, enables the country to deliver on the constitutional obligation to “honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land”.
