The Presidency has come out in support of former President Thabo Mbeki regarding his mediation efforts in African Union which the Sunday Times newspaper claimed cost tax payers R20,5-million.

"Media reports suggesting that the move is designed to clip the wings of former President Mbeki are incorrect and misleading," spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement on Sunday.

"The Presidency will continue to provide support to former presidents and deputy presidents, guided by the regulations and available resources."

He said South Africa was committed to supporting the African Union, its structures and regional organisations in working for peace and stability.

"However, there is the reality of budgetary and resource constraints within government departments that have to contribute to the success of the missions," he added.

The publication alleged that Mbeki's travels to Sudan between April 2009 and October last year cost R20,5 million and included 11 chartered flights.
