Powell flew in aboard a Jordanian helicopter from the Dead Sea, where he was to participate in the World Economic Forum, for a day of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, a correspondent travelling with him reported.
He was to first meet with US peace monitor John Wolf at the American consulate before going into discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalon followed by a brief statement, US officials said.
The chief US diplomat was to confer next with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and then Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz before holding an initial news conference with Sharon.
Powell was to travel afterward to the West Bank town of Jericho to meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas, first with aides and then one-on-one, the officials said.
A second news conference will follow.
The visit comes with efforts still flagging to implement the peace roadmap endorsed by Sharon and Abbas at a June 4 summit convened by US President George W Bush in Aqaba, Jordan.
Abbas has been having trouble bringing Palestinian militants on board a ceasefire deal. Talks also appeared to be stalled on a reported agreement in principle for a withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of the Gaza Strip. - Sapa-AFP.
