Asmal and his niece, eThekwini councillor Fawzia Peer, were travelling in the car in Pine Street in the city centre when it was hit by bullets.
The bullets lodged in the vehicle and neither Asmal nor Peer was injured.
National Police Commissioner spokesperson Selby Bokaba said it does not appear that the attack was politically-motivated or that the minister was targeted.
The Durban Sunday Tribune reported that Asmal had been in Durban for the launch of the corporate identity of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The shooting happened afterwards, while they were on their way to Peer's home.
Peer told the paper: "I was with him in his car and we were driving up lower Pine Street. Several shots came out of nowhere.
They were really loud and Kader, who had his window down, asked the driver to get us out of there.
"The shots were coming from every side and there was a lot of running around. It was really very frightening". – Sapa.
