- Platinum mining in distress … but the perfect storm presents opportunities for the daring0.07 MB
South African platinum mining is in distress, forcing the entire global industry to take a long view on the supply of the metal. This situation is widely known but has suddenly been recognised since “platinum week”. Why has the apparent distress been so precipitous? The industry’s dominant and seemingly unassailable position as a trend and price setter, rooted in the fact that some 80% of the world’s platinum resources are held by South Africa, no longer exists. The industry finds itself in the perfect storm of rampant escalation of costs, widespread and excessively violent labour unrest, policy uncertainty, and global economic slowdown.
