Parliament's Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster was confident that it had put in place effective plans to ensure a safe and secure 2010 FIFA World Cup, but urged South African citizens to assist in the fight against crime and corruption beyond the sporting event.

At a parliamentary briefing of the JCPS cluster, it called on all citizens to participate in community safety forums; to stop buying stolen goods; and to stop offering bribes.

"Doing so, we will ensure that all people in South Africa are, and feel safe," it stated.

The cluster has set a number of outputs that it would focus on this year, including dealing with the overall levels of crime; improving the effectiveness and integration of the criminal justice system; combating cyber crime; effective border management and securing the identity of all citizens.

It noted that all its actions were underscored by a consolidate Public Order and Safety Budget of R85,6-billion, comprising R56,6-billion to police services, R16,3-billion for prisons, and R12,9-billion for law courts.
