Title: Peters: PMR Magazine Business Breakfast
Keynotes for Premier Dipuo Peters at the occasion of the Business Breakfast held in her honour by PMR Magazine to celebrate the achievements of businesses and government departments in the Northern Cape Province, Kalahari Lodge, Kimberley
It is great honour for us to have been invited to be part of this august occasion and to celebrate with the worthy recipients of these awards.
Importantly, we have been invited to come and celebrate with those who will be announced today as winners for their efforts to ensure their businesses join the elite group of those who have won these awards in the past.
We are excited for another reason though.
These awards and achievements happen during a very exciting period in the province. We have just had the Provincial Growth and Development Summit (PGDS) and subsequently launched the strategy in January this year.
At both these occasions we made the following points:
* there is a dire need to mobilize the appropriate skills base for growth and development in the Northern Cape;
* there is an even greater need to harness the partnership between the private sector and government in a manner that will ensure our joint mutual objectives are achieved;
* mobilise our collective efforts to battle the social problems, such as crippling disease which will impact negatively on productivity on the long-run
We believe that by recognising these business entities and their drivers’ in the way in which we will be doing today, we are indeed recognising their commitment and effort to contribute towards a growing provincial economy.
We are of the view that through such celebrations, which are also reminding ourselves of the challenges that confront all of us in the province. Our endeavours to ensure that the businesses we lead and/or manage in the province will have to perform better to stand a better chance next time around to be recognised and celebrated in the manner in which are doing today.
Critically, we are reminded that in order to ensure that our businesses and their business in the province thrive, we have to create an environment conducive for such. Government will have to ensure that the appropriate frameworks are in place and that society is mobilised sufficiently behind growth path that should ensure all are able to benefit from the exploitation of all the resources of the province.
We are therefore challenged in a number of areas and allow me to make a few points regarding a few of these points:
* we challenged to strive to empower in a broad based manner the previously disadvantaged, especially women, youth and the disabled;
* we are indeed also challenged to ensure that we create legacies that will last for many years after our operations in some areas have stopped;
* we are also challenged in the context of the PGDS to ensure that we raise the provincial contribution towards GDP of the country significantly in the coming years;
* exploit the resources of the province with such care and sensibility that we can also ensure those who will follow will also have a base upon which to sustain their lives;
* invest in those areas that have the best possible potential to ensure job opportunities are created to ensure that we address the current job-crisis that looms large over our heads.
We would like to see beyond this event and celebration a real commitment emerging from the business sector to partner government in its endeavour to ensure that we address the most pressing needs of our people and communities.
Job opportunities and sustainable jobs are key in our efforts to ensure that we use the opportunities presented to us as the province. Among these, are the opportunities in the different local municipal areas in the province-wide. This backlog should actually be seen as an investment opportunity for business because this is an opportunity to partner government and also contribute towards addressing the backlogs of apartheid-past.
The backlogs in housing, roads and others such infrastructure are lucrative opportunities where business can partner and set-up new creative ways of addressing the multitude of challenges that confront our local municipalities and also ensuring social delivery. Not only would such also enhance stability and deal with raising the incomes of people, but actually enhance the infrastructure which will be key to raise the profitability of our enterprises and therefore even much greater chances to win many more awards next time around.
With this we hope we have sufficiently lured you to begin to think creatively about what it is that should and can be done to ensure that the Northern Cape becomes a province of prosperity and place for all to life, raise your children and enjoy family life!
That is the challenge.
Thank you!
