All 2 870 troops planned for the peacekeeping mission are deployed with the arrival Sunday of 217 soldiers from Mozambique, said officials at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
South African troops make up the bulk of the force, with 1 600 peacekeepers, and Ethiopia the remainder.
Burundi has been at war for a decade, since the ethnic Tutsi-dominated military assassinated the elected ethnic Hutu president in October 1993.
A power-sharing administration is in place and elections are scheduled for late next year. However, one key Hutu rebel group, the Forces for National Liberation, has yet to sign a ceasefire deal.
