This edition includes country analyses on the Central African Republic (CAR) and Egypt. The analysis of developments in the CAR covers events between December 2013 and January 2014 including the increasing Christian-Muslim violence and France’s operation Sangaris, the Extraordinary Summit of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) to discuss the situation in the CAR, the resignations of Michel Djotodia and NicolasTiangaye, the election of Catherine Samba-Panza as the new Head of State of the Transition in the CAR, and the nomination of her Prime Minister, André Nzapayeke.

The country analysis on Egypt covers the period following former President Mohamed Morsi’s removal from power in mid-2013, the December referendum on a new constitution, and the unrest leading up to the recently commemorated third anniversary of the Egyptian revolution. The analysis highlights attempts by the African Union (AU) Commission Chair, the Peace and Security Council, the AU High Level Panel on Egypt and the various organs and departments of the AU to bring peace to this troubled country, which is still suspended from participation in AU activities as a result of the coup that overthrew Morsi.
