Members of Parliament have paid tribute to the country's youth, urging them to grab opportunities that are available to them, to enhance their development.

A youthful Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba said being young meant being an activist for change.

"Youth apathy is a mere fabrication," Gigaba said, citing the turnout of young people during the April general elections.

The Deputy Minister said the past ten years had unlocked many opportunities for young people in sectors such as sport, arts, culture and media.

He said just over 88 000 young people had been empowered through the Umsobomvu Youth Fund.

"Freedom has created the opportunities for us to enhance and expand our knowledge and skills," he said.

Gigaba said youth organisations should be strengthened and capacitated and the government's Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) should also focus on young people.

Gigaba urged Parliament to continue paying attention to issues of youth development. – BuaNews.
