Foreign Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said on Sunday that Sha-Ath's visit was part of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's and the Palestinian National Authority's endeavours at developing a constitution and their overall reform process. "The Palestinian Authority, which views the South African constitution-making process as a model, approached President Thabo Mbeki and the South African government to assist the people of Palestine by sharing experiences and expertise in drafting and developing a democratic constitution," Mamoepa said in a statement.
Sha-Ath had been tasked by Arafat to lead the Palestinian efforts to draft a new constitution.
"In pursuance of this objective, Minister Sha-Ath will exchange views with South African ministers who were involved in... the constitution-making process, including (Tourism and Environmental Affairs) Minister Valli Moosa and (Provincial and Local Government Minister) Sydney Mufamadi on Wednesday in Cape Town."
Sha-Ath is also scheduled to meet Constitutional Court judges and members of the SA Human Rights Commission on Monday and Tuesday - Sapa
