As tables turn in the Tshwane metro, the opposition African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday outlined its “minimum demands” — the programmes it would be pursuing in the now Democratic Alliance-led City of Tshwane.

“The demand to create quality jobs for our people continues unabated. We will, from the ranks of the opposition, ensure that we vigorously pursue that agenda and that is going to constitute our minimum programme. It is something we’re going to pursue in an unflinching manner,” outgoing Tshwane Mayor and ANC regional chairperson Kgosientso Ramokgopa told reporters.

“The second part is that we want to restore the dignity of our people by making sure that quality services get extended, in particular the people located in the townships — the people of Soshanguve, Mabopane, Winterveldt, Hammanskraal, Refilwe, Atteridgeville and Mamelodi. We’re going to insist that those programmes continue.”

Ramokgopa said his current administration, which ends on Friday, has dedicated over 90 percent of its capital budgets to such “areas of need”.

Ramokgopa said the ANC stands with informal traders across Tshwane.

“The informal traders constitute a unique feature of an African capital city. We will fight every effort to remove street traders from the CBD. We will refuse every effort that seeks to undermine the ability of informal traders to generate an income,” said Ramokgopa.

“We will be at the forefront, insisting that the agenda that was started by this administration, of ensuring that we graduate the informal traders into the mainstream economy continues unabated.”

Ramokgopa said the ANC insisted that it’s innovations, particularly the free Wi-Fi at designated areas must be expanded by the Solly Msimanga led DA administration.

“Our flagship project of free WiFi should be and must be expanded. It’s an innovation that is proving to be very successful. We had committed that by the end of the calendar year in 2017, every person in Tshwane must be within walking distance of a free WiFi site. It’s something that we are going to insist that it must be part of the agenda going forward.”
