Mort ar rounds fired into the Basra camp where New Zealand troops are quartered are not sufficient reason to bring them home from Iraq, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today.

"This has always been a high-risk environment, and the troops are trained to handle it," Clark said on national radio.

The New Zealand Press Association reported that yesterday, four mortar rounds were fired at Fortress Lines, a former naval academy outside Basra that now houses 61 New Zealanders, mostly army engineers, and 350 British army engineers.

Two British troops were slightly injured, and a supply hut the New Zealanders were using was damaged. Clark said the troops were back working on their reconstruction projects today.

They are not to be brought home before the scheduled end of their tour of duty in September unless they are prevented from doing their jobs, she said. - Sapa-DPA
