A new US draft resolution on Iraq was to be presented to the UN Security Council yesterday, with the backing of Spain and Britain, diplomats at a meeting of EU foreign ministers said.

"It's another step in the process. We'll have to see how it goes in terms of voting," said a British official, who declined to give details of the revisions.

According to an EU source, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw informed his counterparts about the new draft, saying that it was revised by the US with changes proposed by Spain and Britain.

Straw told his colleagues that Madrid and London had "tried to integrate the comments of our partners, notably around this table".

British officials declined to go into details about what Straw had said. – Sapa.
