The system would be used to promote a more geographic spread of productive and sustainable economic activity around the country.
At a Parliamentary briefing on Thursday, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said this system would map economic activities and infrastructure in the country.
He said together with the geographic system, a plan for development of a strategy had been finalised to promote a more equitable geographic spread of economic activity.
"We emphasized that we will be building on programmes already in place to address the skewed economic participation and access to infrastructure, services and economic opportunities in the country," he said.
Minister Mpahlwa added that priority areas for investment in tourism infrastructure had been identified with eight concession sites awarded in the greater St Lucia Wetland Park.
He said draft economic maps were expected to be complete by December.
The minister also announced that government would publish a paper for public comment on a national water utility.
The aim of this utility would be to improve water usage in the country and to ensure proper management of the resource.
"Also to ensure that we have sufficient water in the future," Minister Mpahlwa said. – BuaNews.
