New body to be set up to recycle thicker plastic bags

A section 21 company dedicated to the recycling of the thicker shopping bags – that consumers now have to buy from supermarkets – will be in operation by next month, says Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Valli Moosa.

In written reply to a parliamentary question Moosa said on Tuesday "good progress" was being made in setting up the company.

He added the National Treasury would by April have set up systems allowing them to collect the two-cent levy per bag from businesses. This money would be used to fund the section-21 recycling company.
